About the House

Bita Bay House is nearly 30 years old and is well built with a large great room with double french doors that open onto the beach. There are two bedrooms, one queen size bed in the master and 3 single beds in the second bedroom. Each has its own bath. There is a queen size sofa bed in the great room. The house is equipped with beach towels, movies, games, and a good selection of books. The kitchen has every appliance and there is a charcoal grill on the porch.

Make sure you bring snorkel gear and 'boat shoes'. There is an outside shower and rinsing buckets for gear and feet.

The house is equipped with a marine radio. Although there is a phone at the house, the radio is still the main method of communication on the island. Turn on the transformer and the radio. Channel 16 is the "hailing channel" only. Once your party responds to you, switch to a "talking channel" from 9-17. Listen a bit on 16-you'll get the idea.

The VCR works and there are a dozen or so movies at the house. The satellite is not hooked up for television viewing. You can do that at home! We have a good selection of games and reading material. We encourage stimulating conversation instead.

About the Beach

Two small reefs offer great snorkeling for children and adults. Swimming to Bight of Bay Cay is fun and easy, especially at low tide. You can even spear a lobster just offshore. (Lobster season runs Aug.1 to April 1, make sure the tail is 5 1/2 inches long.)

The beach runs south almost a mile to Long Bay. From there you can take a path around the rocks and continue following the beach around Gilliams Bay to the beautiful sand bar at the southern most tip of Green Turtle Cay. The walk to the northern end of the island is delightful as well. Through coral paths and beach, you know you've reached your destination when you stand under the large cross erected at the entrance to Coco Bay and the Sea of Abaco.

Explore the island by bike, boat, or golf cart. There are no poisonous creatures and no crime. It is a safe and friendly place.

About the Town

New Plymouth is a quaint historic town with several good restaurants, shops, museums and food stores. We shop at Sids for groceries (tell Scott and Martha you are staying at Bita Bay). Biking into town is an easy 10 minute ride. Go left out of the drive and all roads lead to town. You'll pass the Albert Lowe Art Gallery - a nice visit.

You'll also pass the Roosters Rest at the hill just before town. The Gully Roosters band plays on weekends (after 10.00pm-ish) and is a local treat of island music.

You can buy bait at the house across from the main ferry dock. There is a sign out front. If they are out for some reason. Go to L&M Seafood and buy some frozen conch. That works too.
While in town visit the famous Blue Bee Bar opposite the basketball court. The best Goombay Smash anywhere. Only open during the day.

The liquor store, The Plymouth Rock, is located at the end of Parliament Street. Good wine and rum selection.
