Little Abaco
Island - Summer Camp
By Anita
Rolle - The Abaconian - 15 July 2002
In an attempt
to keep the youngsters of Little Abaco physically and mentally
occupied through the summer, a summer activity club for boys
and girls has been organized for children ages 3 - 18 years old.
The summer camp, organized by a group of diligent young ladies
of Little Abaco, is a non-profit undertaking and is being staged
at the Little Abaco Pre-School in Crown Haven between the hours
of 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. weekdays. All staff freely volunteer their
time, and all material is donated.
Camp activities
consist of mathematics, reading and grammar, religious knowledge,
social studies, drama and singing and arts and craft. There are
sporting activities such as volleyball and basketball. Professional
business persons in a variety of fields from around the island
have been invited to share their wisdom with the happy campers.
Special field trips have been planned to familiarize the youngsters
with some of the historic landmarks of Abaco. According to organizers,
so far the response has been excellent from camp participants
as the number of campers in attendance is escalating daily. A
light lunch is provided, thanks to the kindhearted gestures of
numerous individuals and a few corporate citizens who have seen
it suitable to heed to the appeals of organizers for donations
of food supplies. Additional donations of food and working materials
are still being welcomed for this worthy cause, as the camp will
run through the end of July 2002.
Camp organizers
have stated that their main objective is "to keep the young
people of Little Abaco focused on positive and Godly principles."
We must remember that children are one of the greatest gifts
we can ever receive from God. Each one deserves to be positively
nurtured in every aspect of their lives.
Therefore, we
as adults should welcome every opportunity to embrace a child,
whether physically or mentally.
