Bahamasair Offers
Flights to Cuba
By Isobel
Sherman - The Abaconian - 15 August 2002
Bahamasair announced
on July 31 that it would begin flights to Havana four days per
week in October. The cost quoted was $89 one way. So we are now
going to fly to a competing tourist destination, one that could
be a real threat to the tourism industry in the Bahamas.
I heartedly agree
with Silbert Mills on Radio Abaco on August 1st when he asked
how could Bahamasair fly to Cuba while Abaco can"t have
the flight to West Palm Beach back? Also he said that to fly
from Nassau to Havana is about 200 miles and to fly from Marsh
Harbour to West Palm is about 196 miles. Yet it usually costs
$300 or more round trip to go to Florida.
I have written
many times about the need for more seats to West Palm Beach because
Bahamasair stopped their service there. Now I will ask the question,
Has tourist arrivals this summer been down because of the lack
of seats from West Palm Beach and how did the price of tickets
affect the numbers?
