Disney Comes to Cherokee Sound
By Lee Pinder

On December 8, decked out in his best holiday duds, Mickey Mouse came to Cherokee. Most children have to make a trip to Disney World to see Mickey Mouse, but this time he came to see them. Even though there are just over twenty students in the school, when word got out that we were expecting such an important visitor, every small child in the settlement showed up, along with their mothers and maybe just a few grandmothers, too.

Mickey brought along with him several fellow employees of Castaway Cay and it's a good thing he did. Did you know he doesn't speak? That's right, he can't talk? so, I guess he brought some friend along just to help him out in case he got lost. Without a voice, he still let everyone know he was just as happy to see them as they were to see him. It didn't take a great imagination to fall in love with his quiet and shy personality. It's no wonder that the whole world lives "The Mouse." Everyone was thrilled with their gift that Mickey brought them, even though some may have been too young to fully express their appreciation.

I remember an older gentleman from Cherokee recalling a time in his very young days when the Prince of Wales came to visit Cherokee. He often remarked that it was an unforgettable day in his life, something we will always remember. Well, I believe Mickey Mouse would probably be an even more remarkable memory for a child to have and undoubtedly we will hear many stories in the years to come about the day Mickey Mouse came to Cherokee.
