Treasure Cay Bahamas Electricity Corporation took over the electric system in Treasure Cay on September 1. BEC had been negotiating with Abaco Utilities Limited for many years and finally made the change over. The supply at present is from the existing generators in Treasure but eventually they will be supplied from the Marsh Harbour generating plant. BEC opened an office in the Treasure Cay Shopping Centre on September 5 which will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Treasure Cay customer accounts will be adjusted to BEC rates beginning on May 1, 2000. Residences are charged 16.79 cents for the first 800 units used in a month. More than 800 units the rate is 19.37 cents per unit. Commercial rates begin at 19.24 cents per unit. A fuel surcharge is charged and that rate varies depending on fuel costs. Any payments made to Abaco Utilities Limited from May 1 until August 31 will be transferred to BEC and credited to the customer's account. All customers will have to make proper application within 30 days and pay the required Security Deposit of $150. BEC will be inspecting each building to see that the wiring meets code requirements. If the wiring is sub-standard, the owner will be required to upgrade to the electrical code. BEC will be installing new meters which have tamper proof seals. |
