Abacom United
Soccer Wins Bahamas Championship Abacom United Soccer Team beat the Cavalier Soccer Club of Nassau by 2 goals to 1 in the Bahamas National Soccer Championship in Nassau on the 22nd of October making them the reigning champions for the year 2000. They had earlier earned the title of winners of the Northern Bahamas Football League. An elated Malcolm Spicer, manager and sponsor of the 16-strong team, spoke highly of their professionalism. "They played magnificently and were a great credit to Abaco," he said. Just six minutes into the game Ednar Petit scored the first goal which Mr. Spicer described as a "superb goal over the gamekeeper, worthy of any major league soccer game." In the second half Jules Julmist brought the team to victory with another goal. Five minutes before the end of the 90-minute game the Cavalier Club scored one goal. The honour is the result of long hours of practice over the past three to four years. "We play every day, whether at St. Francis School or out at the field at Abaco Central High School," said Mr. Spicer. Its president is Sherman Swain from Murphy Town. Its captain, Jeffrey Victor, the P.E. teacher at Forest Heights Academy, is very excited about the event. Of the 16 players, 11 played and two substituted. The remainder "sat on the benches" accompanied by the nine supporters who traveled with them from Marsh Harbour to watch the small team make soccer history for Abaco. --- Abaco Man Wins
Competition Soccer is a major sport in England and Europe and many English people in The Bahamas follow their favorite team's progress throughout the season. One of the most popular teams is the Manchester United Soccer team which each year offers an essay competition. The winners of this competition are treated to a weekend of soccer in England. In March of this year Malcolm Spicer, owner of Abacom in Marsh Harbour, entered the Salute the Fan competition which attracted millions of entrants worldwide. For fifty years the 52-year-old computer specialist has been an ardent fan of the British soccer team, the Manchester United. In 250 words the entrants had to say why they should qualify for the fabulous prize of a VIP weekend at the Old Trafford Football Grounds in Manchester, England, on the weekend of the 24th of February. Mr. Spicer entered the competition in March of this year, never imagining that he would be chosen with 14 other lucky fans to experience what is truly for him a dream realised. Although he was surprised at winning, he claims to be "one of Manchester United's most devoted fans." Their emblems, colours and caps adorn the walls of his computer shop in Marsh Harbour. The itinerary for the February weekend is impressive. Along with the other 14 winners coming from as diverse corners of the world as Russia, Cyprus, Mauritius and Northern Ireland, Mr. Spicer will get to watch the team at the biggest game of the year at Arsenal and be presented to a crowd of 70,000 spectators. A gala dinner will be hosted in their honour at which they will meet and talk personally to the team members. They will go behind the scenes to see how a major league football team operates. All traveling and accommodation will be first class. |
