Subject: Question About Abacos
I wondered if you would share some advice with someone who is planning her first trip to the Out Islands. I and my significant other are planning to head to The Bahamas in March. We are trying to decide between The Abacos and Eleuthera. We have limited funds, and we seek a laid-back vacation. Our desire is to spend a week on a nice stretch of beach and do very little. We've been told that either island would provide this sort of vacation, but no one has shared specific areas they would suggest. Can you suggest your fav beach in The Abacos? Could you also share your favorite place to stay? We would like to rent a small cottage on a nice beach and would love your thoughts about that, if you have any to offer.
If you have time to respond to this email, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks. WA

Hi - I live in Boston and have a plane ticket I can use to get to Miami Fort Lauderdale area, and am thinking of going to the Bahamas - any suggestions for getting out there inexpensively? - I am single and would like to do some diving as well as socializing on a limited budget (my accommodation needs are pretty simple) - any advice you could throw my way would be most welcome! If you need any advice on Boston or New England I will be glad to reciprocate!
Thanks...... DV

We're now looking at a family reunion in the Bahamas for Christmas '97, to include one set of grandparents and four adult couples. Ideally would like a 3 BR beach house with a dock big enough to hold a 2 BR sloop (from one of the local charters). Also need a motor boat of some sort suitable for carrying four divers to the reefs. Kitchen facilities in beach house a must.
I'll be flying a private plane over, so need a nearby airstrip. Others will arrive commercially, so need access to inter-island ferry (plane or boat).
Unfortunately, my folks are quite conservative and a beach house in the midst of clothing-optional beaches would not go over very well. Near good fishing, diving, and sailing is a definite plus.
Am I asking too much of a rental property, or does such a place exist? With "home base" established at the beach house, some of us would want to explore the islands by sloop or by plane, others would prefer to just soak up rays.
Suggestions or comments would be most welcome.
Thanks for your time!

We will be visiting the Bahamas-Abaco for the first time. We are taking our daughters who are 14 and 18.. and they are concerned about having something to do. Or the other side of that comment would be What would be a great activity or experience for us for a must see or must do in the Abacos I would appreciate any insight into the Marsh Harbour area. We will be staying at the (rental accommodation - island hotel) the first week of January.. Do we need a coat and tie for restaurants etc.. As you can see I am fairly confused. I would appreciate any help and I thank you in advance for your trouble.

My wife and I are planning a trip this May (10th Anniversary) and have read about Green Turtle Cay. I'd appreciated your comments on it and the accommodations.Which one do you like, etc.
Thanks - JF
Response:What a great response. I truly appreciate all of your advise. It's good to hear from someone that knows what is going on. Having never been somewhere we are always a little apprehensive about making a choice. We'll only have 4 nights to spend so the villas are probably out if they rent by the week. I like the Yacht Club. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Subject: Vacationing in the Bahamas
I decided to contact you because you seem to have spent a lot of time touring through the smaller Bahamas islands.
I told my (former) travel agent we want go some place a little off-the-beaten path and she suggested the Lucayan Resort in Freeport. When I checked it out on the 'net and saw that it has over 200 rooms, I decide that I better do some research on my own!
Right now we're just looking for a short, four day get away, so we're limited to places with easy access. I would like a place that has still retained its charm and innocence, and isn't overrun with tourists (like me!).
Any suggestions you can provide -- location, where to stay, what to do and (more importantly) what NOT to do -- would be greatly appreciated.
I was thinking about either Abacos, Exumas, or Eleuthera. Again, it has to be easy access since we've only got a few days and we won't have our own boat!
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

Thanks for taking the time to respond to my inquiry about the Bahamas out islands. I really appreciate an "insider's" opinion. We've taken your suggestion and are heading to Green Turtle Cay! It looks like exactly what we had in mind.
I do have a couple of questions, if you'd be so kind. When I called the Green Turtle Club, they said they were "on the harbor, not the ocean". What does that mean and what is the harbor like? Would it be foolish to pay extra for a "harbor view" room?
Also, it would appear that the Green Turtle Club is the best-of-the-best when it comes to accommodations. If one were looking for something on the water, but perhaps a little less luxurious (read: inexpensive) what would you recommend?
Finally, what time of marketing services do you provide? I too am in marketing -- Meridian is a high tech marketing consulting firm in Cambridge, MA.
Thanks again for your invaluable input.

Subject: The Abacos
I am considering a bareboat vacation in late March Early April. I'm having some question about the weather, frequent fronts and temps (both air and water). From what I've been able to see so far, I am wondering if I shouldn't be considering something further south - BVI. My wife and I live in CT and would be looking to escape the northeast winter blues.
Any advice you might offer would be much appreciated.

Thanks for your prior advice. As you mentioned, we're going to take our chances and we've got a boat for the week of April 6. I went out today and picked up a copy of "The Cruising Guide to Abaco 1997 by Steve Dodge. I also read an article in the January issue of Sailing on the strong currents in the coves of Abaco? The article gave a brief discussion of the recommended "Bahamian Mooring" anchoring technique.
Now that the dates are set, I'll take you up on the offer of any advice you have time to offer, including the currents. I've got plenty of time, but with the weather in CT this time year, one can't help but to begin to dream and plan.
J
