Island Captain: The Memoirs of Ernest Dean, by Captain Earnest Dean and Gary Woodcock.
Ernest Dean still lives in Sandy Point where he was born, but he traveled from there as a boy to live at a remote lighthouse so the lighthouse keeper could teach him to read. He became captain of the mailboat, and made regular trips between Sandy Point and Nassau. This autobiography provides a good look at island life.

Wind from the Carolinas, by Robert Wilder. Engaging novel tells story of Ronald Cameron, a loyalist planter from South Carolina, who moved to Exuma in the Bahamas after the American Revolution. He planned to rebuild his plantation in Exuma, but he and his descendants were molded by island life.
